Covering almost 1/3 of the continent, Western Australia is the powerhouse of the Australian Economy, driven by the export of iron-ore, gold, liquefied natural gas and agricultural commodities such as wheat. While only having 10% of the Australian population Western Australia accounts for over 46% of Australia’s exports.
While commodities and resources are the main stay of the WA economy, there is strong service and manufacturing sectors and WA has world-renowned wine and tourism industries, with over 10% of in-bound tourists coming from Malaysia.
Established in 2001, the Western Australian Chapter of THE AUSTRALIAN MALAYSIAN BUSINESS COUNCIL actively supports Australian and Malaysian business to explore opportunities in Western Australia and Malaysia.
To aid collaboration and cooperation between our two countries, the WA Chapter of AMBC has cultivated strong relationships within the Malaysian Business Community and the Australia and Malaysia Governments and through these relationships and the support of the AMBC National Council, is able to assist both companies and individuals with Business, Tourism and General inquiries.
Regular tours/visits by Malaysia Government and Business groups to Western Australia aim to promote areas of mutual interest, including Tourism, Agriculture, Engineering and act to strengthen the relationship between our two countries.
Universities from all States of Malaysia including, Sarawak, Sabah and Borneo have representation in Western Australia and work closely with the AMBC and WA education institutions to increase our educational and cultural ties. The are currently over 4,000 Malaysian students, living and studying in Western Australia and many of their parents have established homes and businesses here. As part of our commitment to supporting the education and cultural ties with the next generation of Malaysian business and community leaders, the AMBC has established a work experience / part time employment program for final year students across a variety of industries, enabling these students to experience working in their chosen field.
The coming into force of MALAYSIAN AUSTRALIAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (MAFTA) in January 2013 provides further fertile opportunities for business to expand their markets in the respective countries and throughout 2013/14, the Western Australian AMBC will be promoting the benefits of MAFTA to the WA business community and increasing the profile of the council with both the Western Australian and Malaysian governments. In addition, with the support of The Malaysian Consulate General’s Office in Perth, the WA AMBC will increase its profile and support for Malaysian businesses looking to establish in Western Australia for the benefit of both WA and Malaysia.
